It's been months since anyone updated this blog. Well, I just got a USB turntable as a slightly belated graduation gift, so I'm going to upload the first 7" that I ripped. The sound quality is less than awesome, and I hope there isn't any extraneous noise on the tracks, but what the fuck do you care? It's free.

Anyway, this E.P. is "Hell, How Could We Make Any More Money Than This?" by Colorado (I think) anarcho-punk/crust band Dead Silence. Musically, it's pretty basic mid-tempo hardcore punk - nothing to get excited about. The lyrics, however are pretty damn great. The best part of the EP is the booklet, though. I'm not including scans, because I'm lazy (maybe later?), but it's got some of the best pop-punk-baiting satire that 1994 had to offer. The title and art are a swipe at newly major-label Bad Religion, and one of the fun facts included reads: "Did you know: punk rock bad-boys NOFX have released several albums (we think)."

I guess you should enjoy. Please pardon the sound quality.

Here

(.mp3, 160kbps)

Statue

http://www.mediafire.com/?ybcxwgm1d5b

post-Chain of Strength band that sounded like a Revolution Summer band. I figured I'd take charge in bringing it back, if only to unseat Ben's blogular dominance.
This is the first (of 2?) albums by the anarchist hardcore band Zegota. I got this at the CrimethInc. table at the Sick Fix/From the Depths/Ghost Mice show. It was a good show, except I got incredibly sick, had to leave the Positive Force table I was... tabling, missed Ghost Mice, and almost passed out on the Metro on the way home. Upon returning, I was then yelled at for not telling my parents when I'd get home, and then I basically stayed in bed for the next five days. Shit, that wasn't a good weekend at all.
Anyway, it's a pretty damn good album. I'd hesitantly classify it as emo, because it does have some screamed vocals, octave chords, and slow buildups. The guitar has this really interesting thin Fenderish tone - if it were a thicker or heavier sound, I'd be more likely to wholeheartedly describe it as emo. The third track, "Never Trust a Cop," is a great song, and reminds me of a mix between "Out of Step"-era Minor Threat and "13 Songs"-era Fugazi.

http://www.mediafire.com/?9bmiymz2vlo
(.m4a, 128 kbps)

Ashes - Wisconsin Avenue Tour

<img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; Supposedly their first album is a punk classic, but these two (their second and third) are bad enough that I don't need to investigate any further.
That being said: "All Mod Cons" is decent if you look at it as nothing more than a proto-Britpop album. It's derivative, and lazy, but there are some good hooks to be found.
Its predecessor, "This is the Modern World" pretty much sucks. The title track is decent, but otherwise...ugh.
The question remains: why am I posting this if I hate it so much? Well, most people like the Jam. Maybe you are most people. I don't want my opinions to prevent music piracy from brightening the lives of others.
http://www.mediafire.com/?mdccawypaly
(.zip, m4a, 128kbps)

Gameface - Every Last Time

Haven't uploaded anything in a while, this shit is awesome, I don't feel like doing tracklisting or big in depth explanation but Gameface play really poppy, melodic, and emotional punk/hardcore, it's fucking awesome. This album just came out in 2006, they're a British band and are apparently hard to find in the states. It's real spacey, floaty shoegaze-type stuff, but the songs don't last forever, they're usually around 4 or 5 minutes, so it's pretty accessible. I've been on a real shoegaze kick lately so this was a perfect find for me. Check it out. Shit is rock solid and I still need to buy it. It's a whole bunch of styles meshed together that makes a really solid album. Jerry Busher who did some percussion with Fugazi and Ted Leo and James Canty (brother of Brendan) from Nation of Ulysses and the Make Up are in this.
From AllMusic:

To call the second full-length from French Toast a departure would be an understatement. To say the least. From the first few bars of the opening track, "The Letter," this almost feels like a totally different band. While the addition of Ben Gilligan probably has a lot to do with the development, the elements that made their debut a solid ride are still in the fore, suggesting a band that -- regardless of member additions -- is progressing rather than resting. While the debut In a Cave was a stark, early-'80s-mood-meets-21st-century-approach affair, Ingleside Terrace feels like a jump through time. Elements of Pavement's brand of melody, late-'80s American underground rock, and more recent electronic styling all mixed together result in a playful, driving rock & roll record that manages to add fuel to the argument that nothing beats a power trio. While In a Cave sidled up to the more chill and distant aspects of new wave and post-punk, Ingleside Terrace -- in both its production sensibility and songwriting -- takes that and adds a bit of swagger, a bit of soul. If In a Cave (perhaps purposely) felt like a small room, Ingleside Terrace feels like moving landscapes and wide horizons. An impressive follow-up to an impressive debut.

Ingleside Terrace

Haine Brigade - Sauvages

Holy crap!!! OOP French anarcho-punk from the late '80s! Suffice it to say that I downloaded this, although it was a BITCH to find a copy that would work in iTunes. This download, unlike the one I used, has the correct song titles and track order, so you should appreciate that I did the work for you.
I actually really enjoy this album, unlike many of the other ".mp3 rips of obscure European hardcore LPs" that I have. Haine Brigade, from what I can gather, formed in either Paris or Lyon in 1981. This was their only full-length album (and possibly their only recordings?), which was released in 1987. I'm guessing that this wasn't a posthumous release, but what the fuck do I know? I don't speak (or read) French.
Anyway, this is pretty high-quality stuff: melodic punk rock with alternating male and female vocalists, along with some occasional artsy saxophone parts. If you're into anarcho-punk, I'd compare this to England's Icon A.D. (who had their discography reissued on Overground a couple years ago), or NYC's A.P.P.L.E. For a better-known comparison...fuck, I don't know. Listen. Here's Charles Mingus, one of the great bassists of all time, at his very best. Also, I am trying to not write a paper on The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock.
The title of this post, of course, is an invocation to Yog-Sothoth, one of the Great Old Ones. Another of the Great Old Ones is Rudimentary Peni.
Having left behind the anarcho-punk scene (as well as performing altogether) around 1983 or so, Nick Blinko et al. began to push the boundaries of what could be considered "punk." Cacophony, the band's third full-length (if you count the EP's as an album...) features 30 "songs" inspired by, or about, the works of H.P. Lovecraft. Some of the music is simple catchy punk, along the lines of their previous recordings. Some of it is also a bunch of random concurrent vocal tracks talking about completely different things. Probably the weirdest Peni of their early period, and weirder is always better.

Rudimentary Peni - Cacophony
http://www.mediafire.com/?4mi5ghjntnm
(.m4a, 128 kbps)

Tracklisting on files should be correct.

Miles Davis - Bitches Brew

I keep mentioning it, but my connection here in Croatia is pretty shitty. The issue is that for reasons unknown to me, my wireless router likes to reset itself. That means I can't reliably upload much of anything. As such, expect to see lots of links to stuff I find or am downloading at the moment anyway. This here is the latter - something I know and love, but only now am getting around to actually having in my possession.

Honestly, Bitches Brew should speak for itself. It's one of the all-time great jazz recordings out there - dense, funky, creepy and generally mind-blowing. No more of that "let's post cruel things about girls we know" kind of blogging - this here is the real deal... well, as far as music "sharing" goes. For my first post, I figure I'll recycle a link I already set up.

Indian Summer - Hidden Arithmetic
http://www.mediafire.com/?anuxw5yindy
(.m4a, 128kbps)

I'm sure most of you know the deal about Indian Summer: no real song titles, jazz records playing in the background of all of their songs, band members referred to by first initial only. All in all, pretty pretentious. However, they did make some of the best and most influential emo of the early '90s. Hidden Arithmetic is a limited release, with something like 2000 copies pressed total. For those of you who didn't/don't manage to get one, here it is. The CD combines the "Live at Pitzer College" bootleg with the "Live Blue Universe" reissue. Two excellent sets, one showing the band in a true live setting, and the other a live performance on the radio.
Enjoy. I'll be back to post more, and waste more of your time, once I buy some damn records, instead of just downloading.

Codeine Discography

This band fucking rules. Japanther are great - think lo-fi garage rock made by a two-piece with a strange affinity for synthesizer, then add totally nonsensical sound samples of all sorts. They manage to be totally unserious without being goofy.

This is easily their best album, and would have been on my list of top X albums last year if I'd heard it sooner. The songs are the best-formed of any of their releases, and it sounds great while remaining low production value. Plus their cover of "Boys Don't Cry" kicks ass.

1. I guess in comparison to Hope Con stuff it's most close to the demo. Definitely sounds like something that came out of the 1990s. Also sounds sorta similar to Harvest which makes sense. The CD says that they formed in 1988 but I can't find anything earlier than this, and according to Amazon this came out in 1998. So anyways here's the tracklisting and the download link:

1.) Intro
2.)
